Chapter Twelve

Ashlee had no idea how they’d actually gotten the two bedrooms painted, gone their separate ways to shower, and then spent almost two hours eating and drinking wine on Ashlee’s deck, because the looks that had passed between the two of them all day long had been so heated, so full of lust.

Ashlee had lost track of the amount of times that they’d brushed hands or arms while they’d been painting. Whether it was inadvertent or intentional, she didn’t know, and it didn’t really matter, because it had the same effect, increasing that tension that was between them, that urge to give into this.

But they had managed to spend all afternoon and evening together without kissing again. Two more rooms had been painted, and Ashlee was impressed with the baked salmon she’d made for dinner. It had actually been a really nice day, especially after how well last night had gone at the concert and then at Henry’s afterwards.

These last two days had been some of the most relaxed and enjoyable days Ashlee could remember. Was it Carla or was she finally settling in and unwinding?

“What are you thinking about right now?” Carla asked as she brought her glass to her lips and took a sip. “You look so… Content.”

Ashlee smiled to herself as she reached for the bottle and topped up their glasses. “I was just thinking how nice these last two days have been.”

“So, Florida’s growing on you?”

“Hmm. Or maybe it’s the company.” Ashlee glanced at Carla before returning her gaze to the start of the sunset, the blues fading into oranges.

A silence fell between them, but Ashlee didn’t regret saying that. And it wasn’t an awkward silence. Not to her, anyway. As they’d been spending more and more time together there wasn’t that need to make conversation for the sake of it, to fill in those gaps with small talk.

“Do you want to go for a walk on the beach?” Carla asked.

“Sure.” Ashlee had been moments away from suggesting that they move inside once the sun had set, more than ready to pick up where they’d left off that afternoon in Carla’s kitchen, but she could wait another while.
